The need
In Egypt, it is legal to sell Scripture materials but not to distribute them freely. Christian bookshops therefore play a key role providing Egyptians with access to God’s Word.
Most Christian outlets are small kiosks within church walls, and thus have little impact on the majority who do not attend church. However, the Bible Society of Egypt (BSE) operates eleven bookshops located strategically ‘on the street’, and runs bookstalls in crowded market places.
Making a difference
This easy and open access often means that Egyptians engage with Christian material for the very first time. Front window displays also provide an opportunity to challenge those who walk by. Many non-believers enter the bookshops, ask basic questions about Jesus and the truth of God’s Word, and in some cases purchase Bibles. Importantly, the seed of God’s Word is sown into their lives.
Another important part of Bible Society work in Egypt is the Audio and Visual products. Literacy levels are low, and audio visual materials at subsidised prices make God’s Word accessible to many.
BSE’s bookshops struggle to cover their costs, and fundraising is necessary. Your gift will help meet the operating costs of a BSE bookshop so it can continue its vital ministry.
Changed lives
A man planning to take revenge for his son’s death walked past a Bible Society bookshop window. The words in the open Bible placed there practically jumped off the page and hit him: “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’… But I say to you, love your enemies…”
Entering the shop, he demanded, "What is this book in the window? Who wrote those words? How can he say such things? How are we supposed to do this?"
The staff shared with him the radical truths found in God's Word and he purchased a Bible for himself. Right away, he opened his new Bible to see if these verses were in his copy as well!
