The need
The Ethiopian church desperately needs well-trained leaders who can pass on a solid understanding of God’s Word to future generations.
“When you have so many growing congregations, you need more pastors, more teachers,” says Ken Lloyd of Serving in Mission (SIM).
Affordable Christian literature is crucial to preparing Ethiopian Christians adequately for ministry. There are few Biblical study resources or ministry tools available in Amharic – the language spoken by most Ethiopians. Most pastors in Ethiopia couldn’t afford a resource library like this anyway. The few books available in English are expensive, and not many have the language skills to read them.
Bible Society is working to change this situation by providing Ethiopian pastors with quality Amharic reference books that will bless their ministry for years to come
Making a difference
Your generosity allows us to continue equipping Ethiopian pastors and evangelists to teach God’s Word to their congregations and produce a mature and growing church.
Working in partnership with SIM, we are providing sets of Bible study resources in the Amharic language. Each set includes an NIV Study Bible and contains 45 books dealing with issues from teaching and pastoral care to church leadership.
The book sets are distributed at teaching conferences held throughout the country where pastors are trained to use the resources. Bible Society will lead a mission trip for Australian pastors to take part in one of these conferences in 2010.
Changed lives
“One way to report our progress is with numbers: training conferences conducted, books distributed…” says Project Director Kurt Michler. “But for me, the project’s impact is better measured by the smiles on the faces of pastors, evangelists and Bible teachers when they receive their book sets.”
It is intriguing to watch the ways rural pastors haul their new cartons of books from a Pastor’s Book Set (PBS) Conference site to the bus station for their long trip home: strapped across a donkey’s back, piled onto the back of a motorbike, or balanced precariously on a makeshift wooden wheelbarrow… But what joy as they lug this precious cargo!
Reaching the goal
• 3000 Pastors’ Book Sets to be distributed over 3 years
• To-date over 6000 book sets distributed
