The need
"Being illiterate is like living in darkness,"
says Julie.
There are thousands like her in Papua New Guinea’s
prisons. Even though many are serving short sentences
for relatively minor crimes, few are equipped for a more
positive future when they’re released because of their low
literacy skills.
Making a difference
You can offer prison inmates in PNG a goal and purpose
in life after their release, by funding Bible-based literacy
classes.
Selected trainees undertake ‘Train the Trainer’ workshops
so they in turn can teach other detainees how to read
under supervision. 258 prisoners have been trained
so far. When they leave prison, they will also be able
to conduct literacy classes in their home communities,
where only about half can read and write.
Literacy-trained detainees will also help translate simple
Bible-based stories into their heart language – an
invaluable resource when conducting literacy training
in their local language.
“Now I am able to share God with others because now
I can read the Word of God myself. I don’t know how to
thank the Bible Society for giving me this opportunity.”
- Margaret, Beon Prison
Reaching the goal
• Offer literacy courses for 4,000 prisoners over three years
• Translate and produce materials for former prisoners to use in their home communities
