South Africa: Prison Bibles

The need
God’s heart beats for those whose voices are not always heard. In South Africa’s overcrowded prisons, thousands of men and women experience only rejection and despair, knowing nothing of the hope and forgiveness Jesus offers.

Making a difference

You can help us transform lives by providing Bibles for new believers in South African prisons. Our partners, World Hope Prison Ministries, invite prisoners who have committed their life to Jesus to undertake a four-part discipleship course. Every offender who completes the initial program receives a Bible in their own language funded by the Bible Society.

In five years, we have provided nearly 30,000 Bibles to prisoners graduating from the discipleship course. The project continues to grow throughout South Africa’s prison system. The ministry has now also extended to schools, through the distribution of Memory Verse Calendars and children’s Bibles.

“I might be in prison physically,” says Lucky “but now I’m spiritually free and happy that I’m able to manage my life through Him.”

“Thank you for the Bible. Now I am able to read and understand the Scripture, and get to understand the Lord and the way to salvation better. My Bible means everything to me and it is the most precious gift I have ever had.”
- Lynnette
