Hope beyond HIV/AIDS

With many parts of Africa gripped by HIV/AIDS, the Bible Society has successfully completed the first year of a three year AIDS awareness and education campaign in Kenya and Uganda.

In association with African Enterprise, the programme is aimed at educating school children in particular about the risks of HIV/AIDS, as well as equippingcarers to look after sufferers of the disease. At the heart of the programme are Christian values and the hope foreternity contained in the Bible.

In Uganda, 22,000 students have been educated on the prevention of HIV infection, using the Bible Society book, ‘Take Charge’. 7,000 students have been likewise reached in Kenya.

As part of a multi-faceted approach, 100 people in Kenya have been equipped to better look after AIDS sufferers who are confined to bed at home.

Wilson Kuria has two children with AIDS and was one of those who was trained. Hesays - ‘I feel confident I can provide them with good nursing care with the kitsprovided by the Australian Bible Society.’

Joseph Kaana, an AIDS sufferer sums theprogramme up like this - ‘It has given me the courage to fight and the strength to care through God’s grace.’
