Four amazing days It was 12 months in the planning and took place over four amazing days. 19 students from the Covenant Christian School headed for Cairns, where they ran a Kidsgames mission for the Yarrabah aboriginal community.
Through a programme of games, sport, drama, small groups and Bible study many lives were changed. 45 of the local kids decided to ‘join the Jesus team’. There was also a major impact on the lives of the Covenant students.
They’d gone from knowing little about aboriginal people and culture to caring so much for them that they didn’t want to leave! Many of the team were in tears on the last day, having built relationships that they’ll never forget.
We asked the students what the best thing about the mission had been. Here’s what two replied – ‘Seeing the aboriginal kids faces and the joy that they have even when they have so little. It was just beautiful.’ ‘Having the chance to lead someone to Christ for the first time in my life’. The students also had a chance to see up close and personal the great work the Bible Society does in reaching all kinds of communities with the good news of Jesus. We’re planning more trips in the future, so if your school or church is interested in being part of another amazing experience, call Mark Brown on 0417 467 076 or at mbrown@biblesociey.com.au
Walking the walk In far north Queensland, the light of the gospel is being brought to the Cape York Peninsula and beyond, thanks to the Wontulp-Bi-Buya college. Its courses cover the full range of Bible and ministry subjects that enable students to provide a broad level of support within their communities.
Palmer and Lena Wapau took the vision, knowledge and skills they gained at Wontulp back to their community of Napranum, near Weipa.
Palmer began Bible studies for the men, offering the hope of eternal salvation and purposeful activities to help them move away from the domination of alcohol. Lena helped the women, by setting up a women’s refuge and a men’s support group. These two initiatives have led to a marked decrease in domestic violence.
If you’d like to see the light of the gospel reach out further and further across our indigenous communities, please send your donation to Bible Society by using the coupon on the back page of the magazine.
