In Sri Lanka

God’s voice in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a nation with a similar population to Australia, yet it’s not even the size of Tasmania. Most people are Buddhist, with Christians making up only 7% of the population. There iswidespread poverty and illiteracy andgreat opportunities for the good news of Jesus Christ.

So the Ceylon Bible Society islaunching a major ‘Faith Comes By Hearing’ (FCBH) initiative there. Sri Lanka has a strong oral culture and FCBH is considered a perfect fit.

The immediate plan is to launch 200 ‘Faith Comes By Hearing’ projects, amongthose affected by the 2004 Boxing Daytsunami. It will involve the distribution ofaudio tapes of the New Testament in locallanguages. Churches are asked to commit to listen through the entire tape with their congregations for at least 30 minutes a week, followed by a time of discussion.

400 audio New Testaments will be distributed each year for three years.Local church and community leaders willalso be trained in leading the programme. Our experience in other nations has demonstrated powerfully the many benefits of engaging people with the gospel in this way. Around the world, live shave been transformed by ‘Faith ComesBy Hearing’. It only costs $2.30 to disciple one person in this way.

Will you join with us to help the people of Sri Lanka engage with the living Word of God? Even the smallest contribution will go a long way!
