In Zambia

WA mission to Zambia

Once again a team from Bible Society in Western Australia has undertaken an exciting, challenging and even riskymission to Africa. They were on the road in Zambia for around a month, seeing first hand the great needs on the ground and also the ways in which the Bible Society is bringing hope and healing to thousands of people.

The 14 member team was involved in a range of activities - beginning with the construction of a church roof in the village of Kalangwa. They were interviewed on a number of radio programmes, including one three-hour stint - live! They also saw for themselves the great work going on distributing God's Word through orphanages, schools, the ‘Faith Comes By Hearing’ ministry and the life changing work being done by HIV/AIDS home-care groups.

One highlight the team will never forget was the opportunity to distribute over 500 Lenge Bibles to a gathering of hundreds in Malambanyama, 300 kilometres northwest of the capital. Many had travelled hours for the event and started gathering at 7am, then waited another 9 hours for them to finally arrive! There was not a dry eye, as these desperately needed Scriptures for the poverty stricken people were distributed. Even many pastors received the Bible in their own language for the first time! We give great thanks to the many churches across WA that helped raise the funds for this special project.

Looking back on another remarkable adventure, team leader, Craig Willis-Jones says - 'We have seen first hand the powerfully important work of Bible Society and we also continue to be burdened by the great need in Africa.’

Here are the reactions of two other team members:
Claire Jenner says – ‘I have been encouraged by the work Bible Society is doing. Originally, I could see more value in giving food or providing healthcare. But now I see that the Scriptures breathe life, and make one’s “soul satisfied as with the finest of foods.’” According to Vicki Gill – ‘I see the availability of God’s Word to those who do not have it as probably the most important thing for Christians to invest in on this earth.’ Craig says – ‘All up, we distributed 1,000 Bibles and Scripture portions, for which we thank God and our generous supporters.
However it's like a drop in the ocean - much much more needs to be done!'
