Face to Face

Leigh Hatcher interviews Cathy Thompson,
Children's Project Coordinator and Administrative Assistant

Cathy tell us how you came to first work at Bible Society NSW, and why.
I recieved call from the HR Manager of a previous employer, asking if I was interested in a full time position at Bible Society. The call came at a time when I was seeking God’s guidance for the next step in my life and as I wasn’t sure if this was where God wanted me, I decided to start the application process and see where it led. The further I got through the process, the more I became convinced that this was where God was leading me.

Tell us what exactly is involved in your role as Children's Project Coordinator.
I mail out resources in response to the orders we receive as well as certificates with receipts for donations and keep records of resources used and donations received. I also help with artwork and production of resources and answer inquiries about the project.

In particular, how much of a challenge is it to keep up with the needs of our children and the many distractions around them, so they can still engage with the Bible?
It is a big challenge to keep the Bible relevant for our children. I would love for us to be able to place a Bible in every child’s hands so that all children can learn about God’s great love for them. The Bible story is just as important today as it has been for all generations. We have to make sure that the resources we provide are modern and exciting so that kids want to have a Bible of their own.

Tell us about some of your special experiences being involved in this vital work?
I love the letters which arrive in the mail from kids who have given their pocket money, cooked biscuits and cakes to sell or do chores at home, because they care that another child has a Bible. It is a privilege to have children share their faith with us and I am sometimes amazed at their depth of trust and understanding. There are also all those creative leaders who encourage their kids to be a part of the project and go the extra mile, by giving their time to organise special events.

How do you view the future of our kids and their engagement with the Bible?
Parents and grandparents are sharing their faith with their kids and there are many dedicated children's workers and lay people willing to be involved in children's ministry. All these people play a huge part in encouraging kids to read and love the Bible.
