Lighting the Lamp of literacy in Cambodia
Illiteracy robs over a third of Cambodians the opportunity to improve their standard of living and the ability to read God’s Word.
Decades of war and genocide has devastated Cambodia’s education system. However, illiteracy is also the result of poverty. Poor families depend on their children to help bring in an income rather than attend school, with few having the resources to pay for school uniforms or books.
The Bible Society in Cambodia is partnering with local Churches to offer Bible based literacy training to the disadvantaged in rural areas. The program aims to reach more than 8,000 people over a three year period.
What impact is this literacy program having?
Recently a team from Bible Society visited a remote village in Svay Rieng. They were astounded when threewomen read aloud to them from the Khmer New Testaments that they had received at the end of their course. They had learnt to read in just 3 months! One of the women was asked “what difference has learning to read made?”
She replied “Before I had to rely on the preacher to explain God’s Word to me. Now I can read the Bible for myself!”
She is now sharing her faith with others and reading tracts to her neighbours.
Will you help others in rural Cambodia discover the delight of reading God’s Word for themselves? Please send us your tax deductible donation with the coupon on the back page of the magazine, phone our donor line on
