A Grandma's Perspective on Youth Missions
from Christina our Office Manager
Life is full of surprises! Here I am a ‘youngish’ grandmother and asked to be part of a Youth Mission trip to Yarrabah, in far North Queensland.
God continues to amaze me by the way he blesses us when we step outside our comfort zone. And boy – was I outside my comfort zone!
With 19 young people from Christ Church St Ives Youth Group we came up for a week of sharing and living the Gospel with indigenous children through Kids Games.
For 9 members of our team this was their second visit to Yarrabah, eager to come back, renew friendships, and minister to this community made up of those from the stolen generation.
If you have a heart for mission then you really are never too old to come with us on one of our mission trips – you’ll be inspired by what God is doing!
New Youth Website
Bible Society’s new youth website at www.biblesocietyyouth.org aims to function as a community for youth - a place to play games, network with other members, invite friends, and get great resources for youth and children’s ministry as well as being a place to share ideas. It also a great place to find out more about the amazing work of Bible Society both here in Australia and around the world.
So regardless of your age, come and check out the site and all that it has to offer, join up and become apart of the Bible Society Youth community.
Have a Night Out at the Movies on us
A great new movie City of Ember from Icon Films is being released on 11 December. It tells the story of the people of the City of Ember who for generations have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights.
But Ember’s once powerful generator is failing, and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Now, two teenagers in a race against time, must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city’s existence, and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever.
First 120 to call will receive a free double pass to see City of Ember please call our office on 02 9888 6588.
A Power House of Prayer
On the first Friday in March each year, people throughout the world meet for the World Day of Prayer. The origins of World Day of Prayer date back to the 19th century when women would encourage one another to engage in personal prayer and to take leadership in communal prayer.
Each year the worship service has a theme chosen by a different country. In 2008 it was Guyana’s turn with the theme “God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding”. Traditional music and hymns sung by Guyanan choirs with photographs of Guyanan life and culture were used to help focus prayer for that country. Offerings received on the day, a total of $70,000, was provided to the Bible Society for its work.
Next year’s service will be held on Friday 6th March and has been prepared by the committee of Papua New Guinea with the theme - “In Christ we are many members, yet one body.”
Carol Price, President of the World Day of Prayer Committee in NSW and Board Member of Bible Society NSW said “I would encourage everyone to join with others in your local community on this special day as the Christians of Papua New Guinea invite us to come to a deeper understanding of how we are one body in Christ”. This is an event not to be missed in 2009!

No Limits - Just Opportunities
If you find riding a bike a challenge – image doing it if you were blind! John Ansell lost his sight at the age of 25
and for the last 25 years has been a keen “Bike for Bibles” rider. Over those years John has cycled many thousands of kilometres through all types of weather,
slept on blow up beds in cold and windy church halls, and - has loved every minute of it!
John cycles on a tandem, and over his 25 years with “Bike for Bibles” has ridden with many dedicated Captains, or front riders, but Dave McCubben needs special mention. John said “Dave has faithfully and uncomplainingly guide my tandem over 4 states, we have climbed mountains, been fried by the sun and almost frozen on frosty winter mornings”. Over the years John has raised many thousand of dollars for Bible Society mission projects, mainly though the support of his local Church, Gymea Baptist.
“So why not join a ‘Bike for Bibles’ ride”, said John, “you will return home with a real buzz”.
