Africa Report Card
from staff member Amiee McCahon
Africa - an amazing country full of colour, passionate,
beautiful people and yet so much pain, poverty and need.
I recently had the privilege of visiting our ‘HIV/AIDS Home Based Care’ project in Tanzania and our ‘Hands for Hope’ project in Rwanda. Both projects not only help bring relief to the sick and suffering but they also aid in literacy and reconciliation through God’s Word the Bible.
I could never fully comprehend the difference between life in Africa and ours in Australia. In Tanzania we visited HIV/AIDS patients in their homes including two young girls - Tamiree aged three and Magdalena who was 12. They quite literally changed my life. It was heart breaking to see them so helpless, suffering and born into a world of HIV/AIDS, living with no choice.
Rwanda is such a beautiful country and after suffering so much, it seemed at peace. However reconciliation and peace are two totally different things. The need for reconciliation is huge. The Rwandan people believe they were forgotten by the rest of the world in 1994 when tribal violence hit their country and over 1 million lives were lost.
We may not be able to change the past, but we can with God's Word definitely help encourage a better future. Bible based education and literacy is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
