Togo

“With my own eyes I have seen what you have done to save your people.

Your mighty power is a light for all nations.” Luke, 2:30- 32 (CEV), that is how Laarba Kombaté, who is over 80 years old, expressed his joy at finally seeing the New Testament in his native language, Mual.


Hong Kong

A recent Bible Society exhibition in a busy shopping mall that presented the Bible as ‘A Book that Changes Lives’ proved very popular. A number of requests have been made for the exhibition to come to schools, community centres and churches.


Spain

The new La Biblia Traducción Interconfesional (Interconfessional Translation of the Bible) popular amongst both Roman Catholics and Protestants was recently launched. The new translation reflects the work of some 20 Protestant and Catholic translators.


Brazil

The Bible Society of Brazil celebrated an important milestone recently when the total output of Bibles and New Testaments by its Bible press exceeded 80 million copies. Built 13 years ago, the press has become a vital tool in enabling the Bible Society to fulfil its mission of transforming lives through the Word of God.


Gaza

Bible Society staff are safe so far from the hostilities in Gaza and southern Israel. Despite the risks, staff are actively involved, even if at a low level, in serving humanitarian needs in Gaza.


Hungary

An exhibition was held tracing the history of the Bible from the oldest fragments of Scripture in Hungarian to the latest electronic versions of the Bible in a way designed to interest not just Bible scholars and Christians but the general public.


Solvakia

“Making the Bible attractive and meaningful for people of different ages and interests and bringing people closer to God’s Word”. These were the top priorities for the staff of the Slovak Bible Society as they organised the various events that made up a special Week with the Bible at the end of November last year.


Mauritius

With rising violence causing concern, Bible Society in collaboration with a group of partners from both the religious and secular sectors, launched a campaign consisting of posters on buses and leaflets distributed by volunteers in areas around schools, shopping centres and bus stations featuring messages about tolerance, courtesy and respect partly drawn from Matthew 7:12.


Burkina Faso

After 23 years of hard work, and the fruit of a successful partnership between the Catholic Church, Christian Alliance Church, Baptist Church, Assemblies of God Church and the Meaningful Life Church, under the guidance of the Bible Society the people of Burkina Faso now have the Bible in their native language, Jula.


Middle East

January this year saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between United Bible Societies (UBS) and SAT-7, the satellite television ministry that broadcasts to the Middle East and North Africa. Christian broadcast can be heard in Farsi, Turkish & Arabic and is a great way to reach people with low literacy levels.


New Zealand

During the dedication service of the newly reformatted edition of Te Kawenata Hou, the Maori New Testament, conducted in both Maori and English, the Rev Te Waaka Melbourne, who has been involved with the project since its inception, said that while the words in the reformatted version had not changed, errors had been corrected and this New Testament had “a new look and spiritual quality appropriate for a new generation.”


Congo (Republic)

Jesus. All about life, prime time television and media campaign will Civil wars and the deaths of translators are just two kinds of obstacle that the translation of the New Testament into Lari has overcome from its beginning in 1978 to its launch late last year. On December 21, the Church of Saint Pierre Claver in the Bacongo district of Brazzaville was bursting at the seams with nearly 2,000 people who had made their way there to witness the launch of the New Testament..
