Tanzania: AIDS patients find hope in God's Word
More than half of Tanzania’s population earns less than a dollar a day, but it is among the 1.2 million eking out an existence in the slums of Dar es Salaam that this nation’s poverty is most starkly seen.
HIVAIDS is especially devastating for poor families, because they have no margin to absorb the cost of health care or the loss of earnings.
But Bible Society is partnering with African Enterprise make a difference here, changing lives by improving literacy through home-based care training for AIDS patients.
Emulating the success of similar projects in Kenya, Uganda and Malawi, a six-month pilot project involving 60 trainees was completed in March 2008. Since then, the project has reached a further 600 people, with 120 men and women being trained in Home Based Care and each training 5 others in turn.
The goal is to improve their reading, writing and comprehension abilities and their knowledge of God’s Word, while training them in the nursing care of AIDS patients.
Many of those receiving care accept the Lord as their Saviour.
Gabriel Limbe testified: “I was on the verge of committing suicide due to my terminal illness, however the Christian counselling convinced me that there is hope in Christ, whom I have accepted as my personal Saviour. I shall die with peace in my heart and mind”.
You can help open God’s Word to many more Tanzanians who might otherwise never discover the hope that is found there. Please donate on line using your credit card at www.biblesocietynsw.com.au
