Arms Outstretched in China

Bible Society NSW supporters were greeted by a sea of faces when they visited the village of Zhou Kou in Henan Province during their mission trip to China in April led by Daniel Barreca and David Lim from our Fundraising Department. The hymn Onward Christian Soldiers could be heard playing in the background as people lined the streets waiting for the team to arrive.

“They’d been waiting for hours, and when we finally entered the doors they clapped and smiled. They were clearly happy to see us and also eagerly anticipating the Bibles they’re so hungry for,” Church, Donor & Volunteer Coordinator Daniel Barreca said.

1,000 Bibles were given to outstretched arms. “Many held on tight,” Daniel said. “Others flicked through the pages like a child receiving a gift for the first time.” This incredible scene was just one of many similar experiences during the team’s travels through three provinces of China, where there is a desperate need for Bibles, literacy and teaching. During the mission trip 5,000 Bibles were distributed to rural Churches.

You can be part of another inspiring Bible distribution trip being planned for October. To find out more, contact the Bible Society on (02) 9888 6588.

Adventure of a Lifetime

Are you interested in experiencing an exciting journey of discovery? Through a dynamic, multimedia presentation the ancient lands of the Bible and archaeology are brought together in an amazing visual tour.

You will travel from Egypt, the cradle of civilization and land of pyramids, temples and Pharaohs to Turkey and the old Silk Road in search of a civilisation archaeologists said never existed; and then on to Israel where you will follow the controversial story of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Along the way you will meet some remarkable people with amazing stories to tell. This is a journey not to be missed. Presented by Zane Edwards, the seminar demonstrates the reliability of the historic Biblical record when compared with past and more recent archaeological discoveries.

Seminars are planned for Port Macquarie on 25 July and Armidale on 31 October. To book, telephone (02) 9888 6588; alternatively, go to www.biblesocietynsw.com.au and click on ‘Archaeology vs. Bible’ to book seats on line.

Hands for Hope Update

Phase one of ‘Hands for Hope’ has been funded, thanks to you, our generous supporters. You have made it possible to reach over 102,000 children! 82,000 children have already been educated in Biblical reconciliation, and the remainder will be reached during the rest of 2009. Over 80 schools have been involved, with over 120 reconciliation clubs established. 350 teachers have also been trained to implement the Scripture-based literacy project.

By all accounts, lives have been transformed. Attitudes have changed, hatred is diminishing, and children are now learning and playing together. Augustine Kimihurra, an 11 year old student, said: “In my capacity as a club group leader I was able to bring Hutus and Tutsis together… I convinced my fellow club members not to be like our parents.”

If you would like to receive a free 12 month calendar featuring the children who have been through the program and their stories please tick the box on the bottom of the donation coupon on page 8 and we will send a copy to you.

Farewell to a lifelong Supporter

Elsie May Bulkeley passed away peacefully aged 99 on 4 March, bringing to a close a lifetime of commitment to the work of the Bible Society. Elsie’s parents fostered her love for the Lord, and her devotion to reading His Word never wavered. She treasured the large print Bible given to her on her 90th birthday by the Bible Society.

Elsie would read God’s Word daily with the use of a magnifying glass. When that became impossible, she enjoyed others reading to her and appreciated the visits of Julie Bryant from the Bible Society. Elsie supported the Bible Society financially her whole life. Her passion for Scripture distribution began at just 4 years of age, when she would go door to door with her mother collecting money for the British & Foreign Bible Society.

This zeal never left her, and as a result of her generosity, many people across the globe now have a copy of the Scriptures in their own language. We thank God for her inspiring, faithful service.
