Rwanda: Literacy Project

The need

Widespread poverty, low literacy levels and high rates of HIV infection are just a few of the devastating effects of Rwanda’s brutal recent history. But the need for reconciliation after ethnic clashes in 1994 is this tiny nation’s greatest challenge.

Making a difference
You can partner with us to improve literacy levels among Rwandan children, using books based on Scriptural themes of reconciliation and forgiveness.

Using the Bible and Biblical principles, children are taught about reconciliation in the hope of achieving long lasting peace between Rwanda’s two main ethnic groups.

Together with African Enterprise, we began the ‘Improved Literacy through Education in Reconciliation’ project in 2007. We have reached nearly 140,000 children so far. The Rwandan government has recognized the project’s positive impact, requesting it be rolled out to schools across the nation to reach 2.2 million students.

“When I reflect on my life, during the genocide period I felt as if I was infected with the ‘virus of hatred’ and that it was incurable. However, through this education in reconciliation I feel cured of the virus through the grace of God and I have accepted Jesus as my personal saviour and pledge never to contemplate killing my fellow human beings”
- Emanuel Mukagashugi

Reaching the goal
• Teach 45,500 school children to read and write
• Train 490 peer leaders to lead Reconciliation Meetings for parents
